Trial journey to school - throughout the region

A change of school, a new school, a new route to school: a challenge for many pupils and their parents. To give pupils the chance to familiarise themselves with their new journey to school by bus and train at their own pace before the new term begins, the Braunschweig Regional Transport Association (VRB) is running the „Try Out Your School Journey“ initiative between 6 and 12 August 2026. Future pupils in Years 1 and 5 can try out their new journey to school by public transport free of charge for one day, accompanied by their parents or other adult carers. The return journey is free for the child and their accompanying adults (max. 2 people). Whether by bus, tram or regional train: all forms of public transport required for the journey to school within the VRB network can be used. Where do I get on? Where do I get off? How does the stop button work? Children have lots of questions if they have had little or no experience travelling alone by bus or train. This day offers the chance to try out travelling by bus and train and to clarify any questions. Through this initiative, the VRB aims to prepare pupils as well as possible for their new journeys to school. „Children can learn, together with their parents or carers, how they will get to school in future. We want to give them confidence and a sense of security when travelling by bus and train,“ explains VRB Managing Director Stefan Bartels. Trial journey vouchers are being distributed directly to pupils and parents or guardians via schools in the region. Anyone wishing to take part in the „School Route Trial“ initiative should present the completed trial journey voucher to the drivers and ticket inspectors on board the vehicles. Following a positive response last year, the „School Journey Trial“ campaign is taking place for the second time across the entire transport network. When choosing a trial day, please bear in mind that during the school holidays, buses explicitly marked as school buses do not operate.
